The delphinium derives its name from the Latin word ‘delphis’ meaning dolphin – from the shape of its buds.  A close relative of larkspur, delphinium originated in China, but has been cultivated in European gardens for centuries and can be grown as perennials in our zone 4 gardens.  Delphinium are available in a range of colors from dark blue to purple to white.  They are one of the few flowers that offer a true blue color bloom.
