Carnations are native to the Mediterranean and are the national flower of Spain and Slovenia.  The flower has become one of the most extensively hybridized and produced cut flowers in the world.  Carnations are prized for their excellent durability, wide color selection and inexpense.  While some may view carnations as old fashioned, the flower remains at the forefront of floriculture research.  Scientists are developing ways to splice genes from petunias and delphinium into carnations to produce blue flowers.
